Sending migrants to the regions no solution to population growth, says SPA

Sending new migrants to the regions, as the new Population Minister, Alan Tudge, suggests is just ‘tinkering around the edges’ in dealing with Australia’s population growth problems, according to Sustainable Population Australia (SPA).

SPA national president Sandra Kanck says current net overseas migration (NOM) is simply too large, no matter where migrants go.

SPA Recognises the Life of Dr Mary White

Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) recognises the significant contribution to Australia of its Patron Dr Mary White who died aged 92 in a nursing home in Bundanoon NSW this week.

Dr White, a renowned palaeobotanist, had vascular dementia which ultimately left her bed-bound, unable to speak and mentally incapacitated.

SPA national president Sandra Kanck says Dr White had been a wonderful Patron since 2000 when she and four others succeeded poet and author Judith Wright, SPA’s first Patron.

Australia almost at 25 million with no population policy

Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) has expressed concern that Australia has all but reached 25 million people and has done so too quickly.  It strongly advocates that policies should be put into immediate effect whereby Australia’s rate of population growth slows and stabilises at the earliest opportunity.

SPA’s national president Ms Sandra Kanck says Australia’s population ballooned more quickly than most other developed countries.

High population growth rates in the Pacific suggest need for family planning

A public seminar in Canberra tomorrow afternoon will address the stresses caused by high population growth rates in various Pacific island states.

Dr James Ward, national president of Sustainable Population Australia, which is organising the seminar, says population growth in many of Australia’s Pacific neighbours is outstripping the capacity of these nations to provide for the basic needs of their people, not least in education and health.

Australia has no coherent population plan other than to inundate the major cities with people.

Instead of a well though-out population policy, the strategy has been to stoke overall economic growth to support big business. This suits the property industry and retailers but GDP per capita growth is stagnating while ordinary Australians are worse off.

Environment group, Sustainable Population Australia (SPA), is calling on the incoming Foreign Minister, Hon Bob Carr, to tie development projects to the provision of family planning within Australia’s overseas aid program.
 
Tomorrow is International Women’s Day and the UN theme for this year is “Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty”.
