South east Queensland populating the life out of paradise (APR)
An upcoming public forum will seek solutions to unprecedented and
unsustainable growth which they say is “populating the life out of paradise” and will
push to limit urban development in South East Queensland,
The forum is open to all South East Queensland residents and will be held at
Redland’s IndigiScapes Centre, 17 Runnymede Road, Capalaba, on Saturday, 21st
April 2007 from 3 to 5pm, hosted by Sustainable Population Australia – South East
Queensland Branch (SPA- SEQ).
SPA-SEQ’s President Mr Simon Baltais said that the forum would reveal how
the Queensland government, with its pro-growth agenda, is destroying SEQ’s
biodiversity and its quality of life with plans to accommodate over a million more
people over the next 20 years.
Ms Vivien Griffin, former Councillor of Noosa Shire Council, will be the keynote
speaker on “Leading by example – how local governments can address population”.
Mr Baltais will outline the toll taken by over-development on the region and
introduce the other speakers, including a welcome by Cr Debra Henry of Redland
Shire, who will speak on how the individual can make a difference.
Ms Sheila Davis, founding President of Sustainable Population Australia –
South East Queensland Branch, will speak on addressing the myths supporting
population growth.
A public discussion with the panel of speakers, moderated by Ms Lavinia Wood
of Community Alliance for Responsible Planning (CARP) – Redlands, will help
formulate solutions.
