Emeritus Professor of Science\, Technology and Society at Griffith University and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering\, \nHe worked on the United Nations’ first Global Environment Outlook report (1995) and oversaw the first independent national report (1996) on the State of Australia’s Environment. \nIan was President of the Australian Conservation Foundation from 2004-2014. \n  \nIn-person and livestream. Don’t miss this conversation \nIn 1992\, the Council of Australian Governments adopted the National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development. It resulted from a process involving nine working groups – agriculture\, mining\, manufacturing\, forestry\, water\, energy etc. The National Strategy would have been a sound framework for Australia’s development. \nThere is no sign of governments following those principles. State of the Environment reports show worsening problems. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a talk  on “Big\, Thirsty Australia: how population growth threatens our water security and sustainability” – based on Sustainable Population Australia’s Discussion Paper of the same name.  This event is hosted by the South Australian and Northern Territory branch of Sustainable Population Australia \nGET YOUR TICKETS HERE \n \n  \nAuthors Jonathan Sobels and Sandra Kanck will explain further how most Australians are oblivious of the momentous changes taking place in Australia’s water security due to population growth and climate change. For 200 years\, Australia’s expanding population has driven demand for more water. As population continues to grow due to high immigration levels\, concerns about water security are also mounting. Recent major droughts (1997-2009 and 2017-19) have put pressure on water supplies in both small towns and capital cities\, prompting state governments to commission large-scale desalination plants. \n  \n \nJonathan Sobels and Sandra Kanck are two co-authors of the report “Big thirsty Australia” and are the key speakers for this event. \n  \nPopulation growth slowed (but did not halt) during the Covid-19 pandemic\, when migrants leaving Australia briefly exceeded those arriving. Then the government restarted immigration at unprecedented levels: six times the long-term average! Even if the government succeeds in reducing immigration to pre-Covid levels\, Australia will grow from 27 million to 40 million people inside of 40 years\, and continue growing indefinitely thereafter. \nThere has been surprisingly little discussion about whether there will be enough water to support this goal. Despite Australia being the driest continent with the least run-off and most variable rainfall\, water planning simply assumes the population projections of the Treasury Department must be achieved. Treasury makes these projections of high immigration levels in order to boost GDP\, without considering natural resources or quality of life. It is assumed technological fixes\, particularly desalination\, will save the day. Is this techno-hubris? Is it wishful thinking? \nThis Discussion Paper argues those assumptions of water abundance are dangerously flawed. It explains why expanded desalination\, rather than being a solution\, is a further symptom of the financial\, environmental and social costs of population growth. The paper argues strongly for net migration to return to pre-2005 average levels\, around 70\,000 per year\, to achieve a stabilised population size. \nBring your questions along. Free. DESCRIPTION:You will probably be aware of the article by Senator Kristina Keneally who called for a reduction in temporary skilled migration numbers.  This was in order to give Australians first opportunity in the employment market as we emerge from  the Covid -19  lock-down.  \nThis reasonable suggestion has met with a barrage of indignant counter articles\, some accusatory on the basis of racism and some calling into question her right to offer an opinion because she\, herself is a migrant!\nSee the article in the SMH  here \nWe feel this is an opportunity to support Senator Keneally’s position by writing to her and also to express your opinion to your local representatives in both the Upper and Lower Houses of the Federal Parliament. \n \nIt is definitely worth contacting other Federal Labor MPs and Senators to try and get them on side.  For example\, we strongly recommend that you write to your representing Labor Senators. Labor needs to be shown by the community\, whilst in opposition\, that lowering migration (and increasing family planning foreign aid)  is a move that is popular in the community\, despite the opposing opinion pieces and twitter storms. \nIn these matters\, timing is vital. It is not necessary to write a long letter but just to express your support for Senator Keneally’s position.  If you like\, you can suggest that Keneally’s position does not go far enough\, and that population policy needs to also take into consideration the environment\,  the carrying capacity of our fragiled continent and the necessity for family planning directed foreign aid in any discussion around population policy. \nWe also recommend that you follow up letters with a telephone call if you can.  Direct voice contact is a very effective way of ensuring that your point is heard by a member of staff.  Remember that all MPs have a legal responsibility to respond to their constituents\,  so please insist when you call that your opinion is passed on. \nIt’s not often that a politician takes a stand like this. DESCRIPTION:No matter where we live in the world\, the decisions we all make about our family size makes a huge difference \n  \nHaving children is a significant life event that has impacts\, both positive and not so positive.  Our position in society\, sense of belonging\, and how we are judged by others is often affected by whether or not we are parents or have a traditional family.  Whilst parenting can often bring great joy\, it can often bring many difficulties\, including financial stress and major lifestyle changes.  Then there are environmental considerations\, such as the impact of more feet on the planet and the concerns in bringing up a child into world facing many environmental and societal issues. \n  \n \nDid you know that in Australia\, the decision to have one less child makes a much larger difference in terms of carbon offset that any individual changes in consumption or lifestyle choices? \n  \nThis is not only the case in Australia with our high per capita consumption.  According to Project Drawdown\, educated and empowered women with access to family planning have smaller families on average.  This not only has the largest impact in reducing climate change of all the measures assessed by Project Drawdown\, but is also a moral issue. It affects gender equality\, fairness\, and mitigating the pain of millions of unwanted pregnancies globally every year. \nThat means family size choices are critical\, no matter where you live on planet earth. \nThis is why SPA has launched our new ‘Stop at 2’ Campaignto encourage smaller families.   We wanted to find out firsthand the human experience around deciding whether or not to have children and the tough choices almost all of us will need to grapple with one day. \n  \n \n  \nIn our video Talking Heads: Choosing to have Children….or not we interviewed six Australians from very different backgrounds and walks of life.  They bravely share their experiences to the camera around whether or not to have a family after considering host of factors including their careers\, activism and the state of the world. \n  \n \nIn Tough Crowd – Jude Perl meets the Baronesses\, comedian Jude Perl interviews three proud child free women “The Baronesses”  who started a social and advocacy group to celebrate and normalise women who choose to be child free.  They share both humorous anecdotes and challenges in regards to reactions from friends and family as they debunk the myths and assumption from wider society. \n  \nSpeaking of comedian Jude Perl\, she was interviewed by famous comedian Rod Quantock on her own experiences of being child free on SPA’s very first episode of Tough Crowd.  Jude shared with Rod her reasons not to have children (both personal and environmental)\,  her experiences of including her child free experiences in her stand up shows\,  and she concludes with a performance of her self-written child free anthem “Let’s Hang Out.” \n \nOf course\, SPA understands that a change in attitudes towards smaller families needs to happen on a global scale.   In a recent interview with the ambassador of Costa Rica\, he shares how his country achieved a non-coercive\, inclusive family planning program that has a seen a reduction in fertility since the 60s and a more stable\, happier population as a result. \n  \nOn February 25\, SPA will be supporting the launch of the film 8 Billion Angels for Melbourne’s Transition Festival.  This film\, made by the team at Earth Overshoot\, details the scale of impact that humans are having on the globe and presents empowerment of women and access to family planning as a solution.  They interview local family planning advocates in India as a case example.  Our communications manager Michael Bayliss will open the screening with an introductory speech.  More details on the screening can be found here. \n  \nSPA is pleased to share that our international colleagues are also working on population and family planning campaigns.  For example\, World Population Balance in the USA are Crowdfunding for a billboard campaign (link here).   ScientistWarning.Org are generating interest for a United National Framework convention on population growth (link here).  Although SPA cannot always share the exact same position or focus of our international colleagues\, we applaud the initiatives being taken all around the world and invite individuals to visit these links to decide whether you would like to get involved. \n  \nWe will conclude by screening our videos across several capital cities later this year along side a feature length documentary on small families.  Watch this space. \n

DESCRIPTION:SPA is very excited to share that we are joining forces with the highly loved Melbourne Comedian ROD QUANTOCK to make a web series exploring the topic of population growth!\n  \nTOUGH CROWD will be a first of a kind series . Rod will be interviewing other comedians and entertainers to discuss the challenges and difficulties they face when discussing population in wider society. \n  \nThis series has HUGE potential to draw interest from wider society. Interviews will share their experience with a poignancy and flare that will be engaging and informative. \n  \nFurthermore\, if Rod has anything to do with it\, the web series will also be raucously funny. If there is one thing our movement needs\, it is a generous dose of HUMOUR. \n  \nIt is a project that SPA has never tried before. It is CRITICAL during this time when mainstream society is actually talking about the issue that we are ready to step up to the challenge and reach out to the ‘Tough Crowd’ out there. \n  \nTo make this project a success\, we need YOUR help. \n  \nMany SPA members are now aware of our CROWDFUNDING campaign\, which we have launched to raise funds for the series.  Support for our campaign has been hugely positive so far\, we have raised $3000 so far with 2 weeks left to go to reach our target of $4500. \n  \nFunds are needed for the production cost of the series\, including reimbursements for the interviewees\, venue higher\, editing and promotion.  We also need to to purchase additional film equipment to make this series snappy and professional. \n  \nWe would be hugely grateful if you were to have a look at the site and consider giving a pledge.  It can be as small as $2\, every little bit counts and furthermore it is tax deductible!  For those who choose to pledge more\, there are some good rewards up for grabs.  These include your name on the credits \, a free CD from my band\, all the way through to your own personal lunch with Rod Quantock himself! \n  \nIt would also be fantastic if you could share this crowd funding campaign with your family\, colleagues\, networks\, fellow resident group members or activists\, or indeed ANYONE.  Not everyone is in a position to join SPA\, but they may be keen on this project if they are concerned about population – or if they are a Rod Quantock fan! \n  \nEvery cent will count.  We are living in a time when  Australia is around the corner from hitting a population of 25 million. DESCRIPTION:We have launched our first ever on-line crowd funding campaign (in addition to the end of financial year appeal).  Crowd funding is an increasingly popular way for people to raise money to set up specific projects and can be a great way to gain exposure and a new audience. \n  \nSPA is raising funds to launch a mini web series called ‘Tough Crowd‘. We are excited to announce Melbourne Comedian Rod Quantock has come on board to assist.  In his relaxed and amusing ‘conversations in the pub’ style Rod will interview fellow comedians\, entertainers and others about the challenges faced in discussing population in the wider community.  SPA is seeking support through our Pozible campaign to fund the whole project\, including equipment costs\, expenses for our ‘actors’\, venue hire\, promotion and all the other costs associated with the challenge of making a video series! \n  \nThe Pozible campaign can be found here and Rod Quantock’s lively promotional video here.  We would be delighted to have your support and ask too for you to encourage friends\, family\, and your networks to play a part.  This project may appeal to people who might not otherwise consider joining SPA – but they have to know about it first! Even if they choose not to fund the project it is still good publicity. \n  \nWe are also proud to announce that our PopCulture web page is now up and running – you can find it here.  Have a look at our youth unemployment video and share it. Be proud because you and other SPA members previously helped fund this through a donations drive. This site will host future PopCulture videos. The relationship between these factors is complex and strangely divisive. This talk will explore some of the difficulties we encounter when we try to discuss population and consumption. \n  \nAlso on Saturday SPA supporters Animals Anonymous will be presenting at 12 noon on ‘Australian Animals.’ Animals Anonymous are only too aware of the impact that human population growth has on the species we share the continent with.  They also run a podcast\, and are definitely worth checking out on their website or their Facebook page. \n  \nIf you are in Adelaide over the weekend\,  SPA and our presenters would love to see you there for your presence\, support and feedback. \n  \nSPA run a hugely successful stall in February for Melbourne’s Sustainable Living Festival.  We’re likewise expecting big things for the SA branch this weekend!

DESCRIPTION:Bill Ryerson \n  \nPresident\, Population Media Center \n  \nThursday 19th November at 7pm \n  \nConservation Council of SA\, 111 Franklin St Adelaide \n  \nSoap operas\, it turns out\, can change the world \n  \nThe Population Media Center works in 43 countries changing behaviour to enhance the health and welfare of people using culturally appropriate health\, human rights\, environmental and economic information. It uses long-running serialised radio and TV dramas (the Sabido method) developed using local writers\, actors and production staff. PMC is a non-profit\, international non-governmental organisation which strives to improve the health and well-being of people around the world. \n  \nPMC’s work has produced dramatic results; its method is incredibly cost effective. Its approach builds in-country\, in-community capacity and supports all local writers and producers. PMC knows that the planet and its resources are finite and it cannot support an infinite population of humans or any other species\, yet everyday 225\,000 more hungry people sit at the global dinner table. PMC offers population as part of the solution to many global challenges. It changes population projections by working to empower women\, men and children by addressing health and human rights issues\, like ending child marriage and allowing girls to access education. \n  \nTo educators\, social welfare advocates\, those concerned with sexual equity\, racial\, ethnic or religious tension\, incitement to terrorism\, environmental/ economic issues; the work\, methods and results of the PMC are highly relevant to all those concerned with bringing about necessary and pressing social change. \n

DESCRIPTION: Free Public Seminar \n  \nPopulation and Ageing: Disaster or Triumph? \n  \n7 March\, 1 pm – 5 pm \n  \nBradley Forum\, Hawke Centre\, Uni SA\, West Campus\, 55 North Tce \n  \nIn recent years it has become common wisdom that an ageing population poses a problem for Australia. This view has been strongly promoted by some business interests that seek immigration as an answer. This seminar will explore the parameters of ageing and whether an ageing population is indeed a problem\, an advantage or some of each. \n  \nDr Katharine Betts\, Adjunct Professor of Sociology\, Swinburne University \n  \nChallenges and benefits of an ageing population \n  \n The demographic transition is a reproductive revolution. It has worked its way through European populations and many Asian nations. In all instances it has beneficially increased the efficiency of generational replacement. This revolution presents challenges but compared with continual growth these are trivial. The revolution means a more efficient use of resources\, more incentive to invest in education\, and assuming low net migration\, more inherited wealth and less competition for positional goods. Claims by the growth lobby that they can engineer youthfulness via high migration are misleading; high migration would make Australia much bigger but only marginally younger and that only temporarily. \n  \nAssociate Professor Philip Lawn\, Business School\, Flinders University\,  \n  \nMyths about superannuation and the intergenerational debate \n  \nSuperannuation need not impose a large tax burden on the working population. The best form of compulsory superannuation is the public investment in sustainable productive capacity to support a decent pension for all retirees. The secret to providing for future retirees is: (a) ensuring the economy can be ecologically sustained; and (b) boosting the productivity of the working population\, which requires adequate investment in education\, training\, health\, R&D\, natural capital\, and low-emissions and energy-efficient critical infrastructure. \n  \nDr Jane O’Sullivan\, Agriculural research scientist\, University of  Queensland with particular interest in demography and food security \n  \nA Sustainable Future cannot be reached through the pursuit of youthfulness \n  \nJane O’Sullivan examines the claimed impacts of an ageing society\, and of the measures promoted to address ageing\, and finds the cure is far worse than the disease.
