SUMMARY:Launch of discussion paper “How many Australians?” by Dr Paul Collins
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Population Australia will launch the discussion paper “How many Australians?” by Dr Paul Collins at 5.30pm for 6pm on Thursday 1 December 2022 in the Pavilion\, Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture\, 15 Blackall Street\, Barton\, ACT. Copies of the discussion paper will be on sale for $5. Tony Zappia MP was invited to launch the paper but\, if unable to attend because Parliament is still sitting\, a message from him will be read out at the launch. \nIf you wish to attend\, RSVP Jenny Goldie president@population.org.au  \n \n  \nMore information of the discussion paper:  “How many Australians?  The need for Earth-centric ethics.” \nAustralia is a big country. Surely\, we should allow the world’s ‘tired\, poor\, huddled masses’ to settle here? And yet\, despite its physical size\, Australia is limited in biophysical and geophysical terms. All our State of Environment reports have found the demands of the current population have been degrading natural systems irreversibly. We are not living sustainably with the numbers we have at current standards of living. \nAnd yet\, the world is clamouring at our doors. Millions want to come and share the riches we enjoy. Do we have a moral duty to let them come and allow them a better life? Or should we protect the ecosystems in our care\, not least the habitat of our iconic koala that is currently threatened by urban expansion and deforestation? \nImmigration has made up the bulk of Australian population growth for the past quarter century. This critical discussion paper on the ethics of immigration addresses the competing demands of human beings seeking a better life with the rights of our natural systems to prevail against the demands of human activities. \nIn this paper\, Dr Paul Collins calls for a totally new moral principle to guide and govern our ethical behaviour as a species. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Making Australian Agriculture Sustainable: 2022 Fenner Conference
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nThis event has now passed.   However\,  video recordings from the conference are now available.  These can be watched from the Fenner 2022 website (link here) or the Fenner 2022 YouTube channel (link here). You may also be interested in our retrospective of the conference at our website here. \nAustralian agriculture today is largely unsustainable. Soils are degrading and are in need of regeneration and broad acre farming is delivering food in quantity but not always in quality. An exceptional group of speakers address the question: Can we feed ourselves and not destroy the Earth? \nSustainable Population Australia is proud to be sponsoring the upcoming Fenner conference alongside the ‘Dick and Pip Smith Foundation’\,  the ‘Australian Academy of Science’\,  ‘Regenerate Earth’  and the ACT government. \nTop speakers at the conference include Charles Massey\,  Julian Cribb\,  Ian Dunlop and Robyn Alders.  John Hewson will open the conference and SPA patron Ian Lowe will conclude. \n \n  \nAfter being deferred due to COVID\,  we believe this hugely important and informative conference will be worth the wait.  It will be held at  Shine Dome\, ANU\, Canberra on the 17th and 18th of March 2022 \, 9am to 5pm both days.  The conferences can be attended both in person ($200/$150)  or online ($40 per day). \nTo register for in-person or online event\,  click here \nMore information can be found on the Fenner conference website here \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \n  \n

SUMMARY:DEGROWTH & STEADY STATE: Why fundamental economic reform is needed
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Population Australia won’t be making a presence at Sustainable Living Festival this year.  However\,  Martin Tye – long term SPA supporter and regional chapter director for CASSE – will be hosting an online event for SLF.  It is open for anyone who registers on 06th of February\,  09am AEDT. \n  \nYou can register for this online zoom event here \n \n“An online presentation highlighting why society cannot continue with economic growth\, why GDP is a poor performance indicator\, and why the only platform for delivering sustainability is degrowth and the steady-state economy. \nThis event aims to raise awareness around the idea of limits to growth\, how dangerous and counterproductive it is to ignore those limits and to promote an alternative economic paradigm based around the idea of committing to operating at a sustainable scale.” \n \n  \nThe National Sustainable Living Festival runs from 01 – 28 February 2022.  More information here \n

SUMMARY:Pronatalism and Overpopulation: Challenging the Social Pressures to Procreate
DESCRIPTION:World Population Balance – SPA’s colleagues in North America –  will be hosting a panel even in anticipation for World Population Day 2021.   This online event will be hosted live late in the evening on July the 07th in Australian time\,  however for the night-owls among us\, please consider going if you can or otherwise recommend to any families and friends living in North America. \nMore information and reservation for this free online event can be found on Eventbrite here.  We also provide further description\, courtesy of World Population Balance\,  below: \n  \n \n  \n  \n\nPronatalism and Overpopulation | Challenging The Social Pressures to Procreate\nThe decision to have children or not is arguably one of the most important decisions we make in our lives. It is largely regarded as an isolated personal decision and a natural right of passage into adulthood. But how personal really is our decision to have a child? \nHuman population has doubled in the last 50 years\, growing from approximately four billion in 1970 to almost eight billion currently. This is no surprise given that we are adding about one million new humans every five days. There is rising public awareness that overpopulation and rampant overconsumption are driving climate change\, resource scarcity\, and biodiversity loss here and abroad\, yet it is a challenging issue to discuss. \nWith China’s three-child policy\, the U.S. political fervor on the “birth-dearth”\, Iran’s blockage of contraception and vasectomies and Greece’s baby bonuses to boost births in the name of religion and tradition\, it is hard to miss the the pervasive and oppressive pressures of pronatalism in culture. However\, pronatalism is not limited to economy-driven politics\, businesses\, or places of worship; it is alive and well in our homes\, families\, media\, and our culture. Pronatalism is the social bias towards having children and because of its importance to human survival as a species it operates via a wide variety of mechanisms\, ranging from the subtle to the overt\, and from “freely-chosen” to the coercive. Its measures are a cheap way of ensuring that people have children – whether they want them or not\, whether it is safe to bring a child into this world or not\, and whether it comes at the expense of our own well-being and that of our children\, other humans\, animals\, and our planet\, and ultimately the survival of our own species\, or not. \nOn this panel\, we will explore the concept and roots of pronatalism\, its intimate connection with overpopulation\, and its impacts on our identity\, on other humans\, animals\, and the environment. \n\n\nEvent Details\nVirtual Webinar Panel and Live Q&A \nWednesday | July 7 | 12-1:15pm EDT \nRegistration for this virtual event is FREE and required to attend. All registrants will receive a link to attend the event via email approximately 24 hours prior to the event. \n\n\nThe Panel\nLaura Carroll\nLaura is an internationally recognized expert on the childfree choice. She is the author of The Baby Matrix: Why Freeing Our Minds from Outmoded Thinking about Parenthood & Reproduction Will Create a Better World\, a book on the societal impacts of pronatalism and the importance of moving to a post-pronatalist world. Her books also include: Man Swarm: How Overpopulation is Killing the Wild World (Co-author)\, Voluntary and Involuntary Childlessness: The Joys of Otherhood? (Contributor)\, and Families of Two: Interviews with Happily Married Couples without Children by Choice. Laura has been featured on major television and radio media\, including ABC’s Good Morning America\, NPR and Canadian CBC public radio. She and her work have been in a wide range of print/digital media\, including Women’s Health (UK & South Africa)\, Fortune\, The Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine. \nElisabeth Dimitras\nElisabeth holds a BSc on Mathematics and an MSc on Biodiversity Conservation but she decided to work on neither of these domains due to the fact that they are both human centered. For the last three years she has been working as a freelance researcher for international anti-speciesist NGOs. Being a passionate environmental\, wild & stray animal protection activist from her childhood\, she set up in 2017 an educational online platform called Ethos & Empathy\, through which she tries to raise awareness on issues related to non-human and human animal rights\, as well as to ecology. Currently\, the focus of her advocacy is on promoting a vegan\, child free and flight free lifestyle as these are the three main ways to live a life with a low carbon footprint. Recently she shared her views on that matter\, in the 1st episode of a relevant mini documentary series by the Guardian\, called The Baby Bust. \nOrna Donath\nOrna is an Israeli sociologist\, lecturer\, writer and feminist activist. She is a social activist and the writer of the book “Regretting Motherhood” which was translated into 14 languages\, in which she discusses the pressures placed on women\, whose choices are seen as a threat to the status quo. In addition to her academic research\, she has served as the chairwoman of the governing board of one of the rape crisis centers in Israel. She is still volunteering in the center\, since 2004. \nDr. Amrita Nandy\nAmrita is a New Delhi-based researcher and writer whose work on gender\, rights and culture has been published in national and international books\, journals and newspapers. Uncommon Mothers\, Childfree Women (Zubaan and New Text\, 2017). Winner of the 2015 Laadli National Media and Advertising Award for Gender Sensitivity\, Amrita has a Ph.D from Jawaharlal Nehru University\, New Delhi\, and a Master’s from the University of Oxford\, U.K. Currently\, she works with human rights and feminist organizations and looks after her elderly parents and plants\, while trying to fuse it all with the contemplative-spiritual. \nModerator: Nandita Bajaj\nNandita is the Executive Director at World Population Balance and brings over 15 years of experience in engineering\, education\, environmental and animal advocacy\, and non-profit management to WPB. A Humane Educator and a passionate advocate for planetary health\, Nandita’s area of interest is on the intimate links between pronatalism\, anthropocentrism and overpopulation and their impacts on human rights\, animal protection\, and environmental preservation. She has a B.Eng. (Aerospace Engineering) from Ryerson University and a B.Ed. from University of Toronto. Nandita is completing her M.Ed. in Humane Education from Antioch University. SUMMARY:Write to your Federal MPs in support of MP Kristina Keneally to reduce migration
DESCRIPTION:You will probably be aware of the article by Senator Kristina Keneally who called for a reduction in temporary skilled migration numbers.  This was in order to give Australians first opportunity in the employment market as we emerge from  the Covid -19  lock-down.  \nThis reasonable suggestion has met with a barrage of indignant counter articles\, some accusatory on the basis of racism and some calling into question her right to offer an opinion because she\, herself is a migrant!\nSee the article in the SMH  here \nWe feel this is an opportunity to support Senator Keneally’s position by writing to her and also to express your opinion to your local representatives in both the Upper and Lower Houses of the Federal Parliament. \n \nIt is definitely worth contacting other Federal Labor MPs and Senators to try and get them on side.  For example\, we strongly recommend that you write to your representing Labor Senators. Labor needs to be shown by the community\, whilst in opposition\, that lowering migration (and increasing family planning foreign aid)  is a move that is popular in the community\, despite the opposing opinion pieces and twitter storms. \nIn these matters\, timing is vital. It is not necessary to write a long letter but just to express your support for Senator Keneally’s position.  If you like\, you can suggest that Keneally’s position does not go far enough\, and that population policy needs to also take into consideration the environment\,  the carrying capacity of our fragiled continent and the necessity for family planning directed foreign aid in any discussion around population policy. \nWe also recommend that you follow up letters with a telephone call if you can.  Direct voice contact is a very effective way of ensuring that your point is heard by a member of staff.  Remember that all MPs have a legal responsibility to respond to their constituents\,  so please insist when you call that your opinion is passed on. \nIt’s not often that a politician takes a stand like this. In our view she has very adequately defended her position in the face quite intimidating interrogation by media entities. \nSenator Keneally can be contacted here \nTo find your own representatives \nPlease don’t hesitate to contact SPA at media@population.org.au  if you would like any further assistance with advice on writing to your MP (including examples of pro forma letters).  Also\, please email to let us know if your MP responds and there is any news you would like to share with us.

SUMMARY:SPA launches Stop at 2 Campaign
DESCRIPTION:No matter where we live in the world\, the decisions we all make about our family size makes a huge difference \n  \nHaving children is a significant life event that has impacts\, both positive and not so positive.  Our position in society\, sense of belonging\, and how we are judged by others is often affected by whether or not we are parents or have a traditional family.  Whilst parenting can often bring great joy\, it can often bring many difficulties\, including financial stress and major lifestyle changes.  Then there are environmental considerations\, such as the impact of more feet on the planet and the concerns in bringing up a child into world facing many environmental and societal issues. \n  \n \nDid you know that in Australia\, the decision to have one less child makes a much larger difference in terms of carbon offset that any individual changes in consumption or lifestyle choices? \n  \nThis is not only the case in Australia with our high per capita consumption.  According to Project Drawdown\, educated and empowered women with access to family planning have smaller families on average.  This not only has the largest impact in reducing climate change of all the measures assessed by Project Drawdown\, but is also a moral issue. It affects gender equality\, fairness\, and mitigating the pain of millions of unwanted pregnancies globally every year. \nThat means family size choices are critical\, no matter where you live on planet earth. \nThis is why SPA has launched our new ‘Stop at 2’ Campaignto encourage smaller families.   We wanted to find out firsthand the human experience around deciding whether or not to have children and the tough choices almost all of us will need to grapple with one day. \n  \n \n  \nIn our video Talking Heads: Choosing to have Children….or not we interviewed six Australians from very different backgrounds and walks of life.  They bravely share their experiences to the camera around whether or not to have a family after considering host of factors including their careers\, activism and the state of the world. \n  \n \nIn Tough Crowd – Jude Perl meets the Baronesses\, comedian Jude Perl interviews three proud child free women “The Baronesses”  who started a social and advocacy group to celebrate and normalise women who choose to be child free.  They share both humorous anecdotes and challenges in regards to reactions from friends and family as they debunk the myths and assumption from wider society. \n  \nSpeaking of comedian Jude Perl\, she was interviewed by famous comedian Rod Quantock on her own experiences of being child free on SPA’s very first episode of Tough Crowd.  Jude shared with Rod her reasons not to have children (both personal and environmental)\,  her experiences of including her child free experiences in her stand up shows\,  and she concludes with a performance of her self-written child free anthem “Let’s Hang Out.” \n \nOf course\, SPA understands that a change in attitudes towards smaller families needs to happen on a global scale.   In a recent interview with the ambassador of Costa Rica\, he shares how his country achieved a non-coercive\, inclusive family planning program that has a seen a reduction in fertility since the 60s and a more stable\, happier population as a result. \n  \nOn February 25\, SPA will be supporting the launch of the film 8 Billion Angels for Melbourne’s Transition Festival.  This film\, made by the team at Earth Overshoot\, details the scale of impact that humans are having on the globe and presents empowerment of women and access to family planning as a solution.  They interview local family planning advocates in India as a case example.  Our communications manager Michael Bayliss will open the screening with an introductory speech.  More details on the screening can be found here. \n  \nSPA is pleased to share that our international colleagues are also working on population and family planning campaigns.  For example\, World Population Balance in the USA are Crowdfunding for a billboard campaign (link here).   ScientistWarning.Org are generating interest for a United National Framework convention on population growth (link here).  Although SPA cannot always share the exact same position or focus of our international colleagues\, we applaud the initiatives being taken all around the world and invite individuals to visit these links to decide whether you would like to get involved. \n  \nWe will conclude by screening our videos across several capital cities later this year along side a feature length documentary on small families.  Watch this space. \n

SUMMARY:SPA reflects on our hugely successful 2019 public forum
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 27th April 2019\,  Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) hosted a free public forum:  “Population\, Sustainability and Quality of Life:  what future do we want for Australia?” \n  \nAlmost 100 members of the public attended the beautiful EcoCentre at Griffith Univeristy\, Brisbane Queensland.  We were fortunate to enjoy some powerful and motivating presentations from a variety of speakers including:  Hugh Possingham (The Nature Conservancy);  Sue Arnold (Australians for Animals); Steve McDonald (President of Redlands2030); Cameron Murray (Economist and Sustainable Australia Party candidate); Crispin Hull (Journalist for the Canberra Times); Charles Worringham (spokesperson for The Greens); and Kelvin Thomson (Former Labor MP for Wills). \n  \nGiven that population has been dismissed as a fringe issue in the past\, the diversity of our enthusiastic speakers is indicative of the contrary – that people from all walks of life are now aware of the impacts of population growth and are keen to talk about it! \n  \nOur speakers covered a variety of topics such as the impacts of population growth on the environment\, habitat\, urban planning and infrastructure.  They explored some of the reasons why many sectors of our society continue to uphold the belief that rapid population growth is necessary for a prosperous economy whilst debunking several enduring myths around ageing societies.  The information delivered was sometimes alarming as the impacts of population growth are increasingly felt throughout society and in our natural environments.  However\, there was also cause for hope and a call to arms\, especially from Kelvin Thomson who shared his wisdom on what we all must do to address these serious problems. \n  \nThe presenters were invited to join a Q&A panel\, where some real postive\, constructive and dynamic conversations were had with the audience. \n  \nVideos for Dr Cameron Murray\, Kelvin Thomson\, Steve McDonald and Charles Worringham are all now available on the SPA YouTube Channel.   All contain powerful messages and we strongly recommend sharing these videos or any others on our YouTube channel with your friends\, family and networks. \n  \n \n  \n  \nWe would also like to provide: \n– The transcript of the speeches from Sue Arnold and Crispin Hull \n– The presentation slides from Hugh Possingham\, Sue Arnold and Cameron Murray. \nThese pdfs can be found at the bottom of the page and provide a wealth of insight and wisdom.  Again\, we invite all to share. \n  \nA huge thank you to everyone who came along\, the presenters\, all who volunteered on the day and last but not least\, to Jane O’Sullivan and the Queensland branch for making possible such a successful\, well-run and essential event. \n\n\n\nHugh Possinham presentation slides.pdf\nSue Arnold transcript.pdf\nSue Arnold presentation slides.pdf\nCrispin Hull Transcript.pdf\nCameron Murray presentation slides.pdf

SUMMARY:Public launch of Tough Crowd series
DESCRIPTION:SPA is celebrating the success of the public launch of the TOUGH CROWD series. \n  \nTough Crowd is our new YouTube series where much loved comedian Rod Quantock interviews comedians\, environmentalists\, politicians and other interesting people on their perspectives on population and their personal journeys and challenges when dealing and talking about this difficult but very important topic. \n  \nIn episode one\, Series one of Tough Crowd\, Rod Quantock chats with comedian/musician Jude Perl. Jude discusses her reasons for not having children and some of the challenges involved in convincing her friends and family on her decision.  Jude discusses how she incorporates her child- free journey into her live shows and songs and why it is important to be a role model for others who are having second thoughts on having children. Jude goes on to perform a live rendition of her very topical original song\, ‘Let’s Hang Out’. \n  \nOther interviews include Sri Lankan born environmental scientist Asitha Samarawickrama\, and candidates for AJP and Sustainable Australia\, Bruce Poon and Mark McDonald. \n  \nThe Tough Crowd series was formed by a chance meeting between Rod Quantock and former SPA National President\, Dr James Ward.  The idea was to create a personable\, relatable and entertaining series of interviews around the challenges of talking about population in wider society.  The project was funded by a generous donation from Dick Smith in conjunction to SPA’s first ever crowd funding campaign. \n  \nWe hosted a public screening in Melbourne to celebrate the project\, acknowledge the crowd funding supporters and other contributors to the project\, and to finally launch the series to the wider world.  The response to the screening was enthusiastic and supportive.  The screening was part of the Sustainable Living Festival program and we thank SLF for their partnership and support. \n  \nEpisode one of Tough Crowd is now available to watch on our YouTube channel.  We will be releasing an episode every couple of weeks so stay tuned! \n  \nBelow are some photos from the opening night of the public screening.

SUMMARY:Victorian Members - write to your newly elected parliament about your population concerns
DESCRIPTION:To our Victorian members\, Victorian supporters\, and anyone living in Victoria concerned about the record population growth in the state.  Growth which is threatening to liveability and long term sustainability of both Melbourne and regional Victoria. \n  \nWith a freshly elected Victorian state parliament\,  we suspect that population will be a hot topic for the next parliamentary term. \n  \nTherefore\, it is an ideal time to write to your serving MPs to tell them exactly why high population in Victoria is not serving you. \n  \nThe more of us that write to our politicians\, the louder the voice for change in population policy will become. \n  \nFor this reason\, we have written a pro-forma letter that we believe covers the main points\, makes a convincing argument and is keeping to the style that we believe politicians will read. \n  \nPlease feel free to use the entirely of this pro-forma or to personalise it when sending to your local lower and upper house MPS. \n  \nYou can search for your own representatives at the website here \n  \nThank you and good luck! \n  \nSustainable Population Australia (SPA)\, Victoria and Tasmania Branch \n  \npro forma letter below: \n  \n{local member} \n  \n{date} \n  \nDear (Title and name) \, \nI am writing to you today in relation to the rapid rate of population growth within our state\, particularly within Greater Melbourne\, which is growing at over 100\,000 per annum.  The only debate within government and the media is centred around “where Victoria should house all of the population growth”\, but surely the bigger debate is on the merits of population growth\, and whether it is a good idea at all? \nPopulation growth is an issue which exacerbates many of the common concerns of today:congestion\, liveability\, environment\, water security\, public-debt\, and housing affordability.  Therefore\, it is essential that the all levels of government consider these issues against any future population growth. \nMelbourne reached 5 million in 2018\, and is now projected to be a Megacity of 8 million by 2051.  This would be a very poor outcome for residents: \nA Melbourne of 8 million is not a liveable city. \nA Melbourne of 8 million is not a prosperous city. \nA Melbourne of 8 million is not a sustainable city. \nA Melbourne of 8 million is not an affordable city. \n  \nThe Victorian government’s plan to continue to expand the suburban fringe (i)  has created large pockets of sprawl\, which offer a poor quality of life for residents.  City fringe residents face commute times of up to 2 hours\, and confined to a 300m2 block (ii) \, yet don’t enjoy any of the benefits of rural lifestyles.  However\, with median house prices in excess of $1 million for the majority of Melbourne’s established suburbs\, few families have a choice but to live in these fringe estates. \nThe alternative of increasing the density of Melbourne with more apartments is no panacea either.  Historic buildings and family homes have been replaced with cranes and constructions sites across all of inner Melbourne.  It is a property developers’ paradise.  For residents\, however\, high density living has been shown to have adverse mental and physical effects . \nThe Property Council and business lobby groups will insist that more infrastructure is the solution.  Planning consultant Marcus Spiller has said\, “We are now just so far behind that there’s almost no way to catch up with the growth”. (iii)  Current infrastructure projects such as: the level crossing removal ($4 billion)\, the Melbourne metro project ($11 billion)\, Northeast link ($15 billion) are a huge impost on the state’s budget\, and are at best a band-aid on the city’s growing congestion.  Furthermore\, the huge cost of this “growth infrastructure” is diverting funds away from other essential services\, while piling the state under a mountain of debt. \nThe Treasurer\, Tim Pallas\, has trumpeted the benefits of population growth as a boon for the Victorian Economy.  This ignores the fact that per capita\, the Victorian economy has gone backwards in four of the past eight years (iv).  Our current trajectory towards a future of 8 million Melbournians is perilous\, and not in the best interests of the electorate. \n  \nI urge you consider the following actions: \n1. To actively debate the topic of population growth within state parliament\, and to seek public consultation on the current growth agenda \n2. To develop a population policy which considers all of the impacts of population growth on Australia’s:  economy\, health\, environment\, and living standards. \n3. Negotiate with the federal government to reduce Australia’s immigration intake in line with long-term historical levels of 70\,000 per annum.  Net migration is responsible for 60% of Australia’s annual population increase\, making immigration policy our ‘de facto’ population policy\, at present. \n  \nI look forward to your response. \n  \nRegards\, \n  \n{your name} \n  \n(i)  https://www.domain.com.au/news/melbournes-urban-sprawl-continues-to-the-north-with-more-new-suburbs-20171103-gzeix2/ \n  \n(ii)  https://www.realestate.com.au/news/blocks-shrinking-in-melbourne-housing-estates-to-keep-prices-down-report-says/ \n  \n(iii)  https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/city-east/sydneys-high-density-living-could-lead-to-health-crisis-says-environmental-consultant-tony-recsei/news-    story/46f635cf0c437e9018b1d58ca50576a9?nk=bca1a77baadc9f7b0118f33e2cebeba5-1544224777 \n  \n(iv)  http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/4-million-5-million-8-million-how-big-is-too-big-for-liveable-melbourne-20170630-gx1uo9.html \n
