SPA responds to Earth Overshoot Day on July 28

Sustainable Population Australia has been busy in response to Earth Overshoot Day,  which falls on July 28th.

According to the Earth Overshoot press release:

“Each year, Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity has used all the biological resources that Earth regenerates during the entire year. Humanity currently uses 75% more than what the planet’s ecosystems can regenerate—or “1.75 Earths…Earth Overshoot Day 2022 lands on July 28, earlier than last year.”

SPA believes that the world is in severe overshoot and that population sustainability plays a critical role to get us back into balance.

On July 27,  SPA launched a media release: “Earth Overshoot Day edges ever earlier.”  Our media release was reproduced in several print media outlets (for example, here) and an interview with our National President Jenny Goldie on ABC Central West (NSW).

The online ‘YourLifeChoices’  journal launched an opinion piece from our communications manager Michael Bayliss,  “On Earth Overshoot Day, it is time for Australians to fix the state of our environment.”  This article also touches on the recent State of Environment 2021 Report that was given its eventual release in July 2022.

Our Post-Growth Australia Podcast,  also launched an episode “Earth Overshoot Day 2022 with CASSE’s Brian Czech“.  Brian Czech is founder of the Centre for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE). As a figurehead of the Degrowth movement, Brian makes a perfect voice of reason for this year’s Earth Overshoot Day,
